Practice # 1

Here's the word list... let's see if you can find them in the story
  • abash - embarrass
  • absorb- suck or drink up
  • absolute- complete
  • abolish- end
  • abominable - extremely unpleasant
  • acrophobia- fear of heights
  • accessible- obtainable
  • abyss- vast bottomless pit
  • abundant- plentiful
  • abusive- physically harmful

We boarded the yellow school bus and filled into the worn seats as Mrs. Marsh told us, for the millionth time it seemed, to be absolutely certain we did not need to go to the bathroom. Beth rolled her eyes and stuck her tongue out at Mrs. Marsh and I felt abashed when Mrs. Marsh caught her. As Mrs. Marsh raised her eyebrow Beth exclaimed loudly enough to be heard over the undeniably abundant noise "And that's the face my Brother made when my Mom brought out the Lima beans!" She then burst unto a fit of laughter and gave me, what I would call, an abusive punch to the gut so I would join her. Mrs. March sighs and turns to scold a kid named Tommy for chewing gum, abolishing all of my worries. The ride to the zoo was shockingly not as abominable as I thought it would be, seeing as Beth made me laugh constantly through the ride. When we arrived Mrs. March instructed us to 'absorb as much of this journey as possible', causing Beth and me to giggle as we exited the bus. We split into our pre-determined groups and head off to various places throughout the zoo. When our group reached the bridge which hovers over the elephants way below I froze, my acrophobia taking control of me.
"Heidi, come on, it's not an abyss or anything it's just a few feet below us." Beth said. I sigh as Beth continued to convince me to cross the horrid bridge. I grabbed her hand and ran across the bridge screaming. When we reached the other side I collapsed to the ground. I heard the snickering of my classmates but continued to ignore them. From this corner of the path, we watched the elephants grazing calmly below the bridge. When our tour guide arrives, the rest of our group in tow, he explained to me that there was an accessible private route we could take to return to our bus, without any dreadful bridges. I relaxed and enjoyed the rest of the trip and once we were safely on the bus again Beth asked mocking Mrs. March's accent "So, did you 'absorb as much of this journey as possible' Heidi?" We busted out laughing and miraculously I managed to reply between short breaths that I did.

The Project

I am entering ninth grade and along with that comes with a few... extra worries. For this girl, it's time to begin working on the SAT. My mom made a project of it.First I got a bunch of heavy hand-me- down books, including one with a killer wordlist. The assignment is simple and creative. I have to write a short story to go withevery two pages of words. I am to choose ten words then somehow add them into the story. So far, I've been getting away with picking words I've already known, but it'll only be that way for the first five, because my mom caught me. So I hope these stories interest you, and in someway spark ideas for your testing preparation strategies.
